It's like a twisted version of Dr. Seuss's Grinch.

Couldn't get the good ending though.

Thanks so much for giving it ago! I’ve really enjoyed watching ur videos. This one skews a little too dark for me tbh. I learned a lot from it though.

*spoilers*

But if you want the good ending : you have to eat the normal charcoal, knock down the correct tree (there’s one tree with a body hanging in it, I saw you look at it I think). Don’t burn, knock it down. And then you pick the dude with the scribbles to kill. There was hints in the newspaper at the very beginning for who to kill.

I wanted to make a story about the very predatory nature of some who try and sell something to grieving parents. Like a psychic who says “I can talk to your child”. I wanted it to feel like a no win scenario. But fun fact this is one of my only games with a happy ending! I felt so bad for her I had to include one.

Intense game, intense subject matter, solid visuals, short but great story

how many endings are here?

(+1)

Three! It’s definitely a tragic, careful what you wish for type story. So there is a happy ending it’s just not easy to get. There’s a worst, bad and good ending. Thanks for playing <3

does it matter which one i choose to kill? (I chose the one who said "i didnt do anything wrong", bc usually they are the worst)

(+1)

Yes it does! Each step has three major options, except the tree which has three options And a correct tree. With the killings at the end there’s a correct person to kill annddd there’s a hint as to who it is in the newspaper at the top of the game. To get the happy ending you need to get each step correct. If you get any wrong all along the way you get the bad ending and if you pick the worst options each time you get the worst ending.

It’s a dark game. I wanted it to feel like a no win scenario but I had to include a happy ending for my own heart and peace of mind haha.

I wish there was a walkthrough for achieving endings... So many variants...

Ohh, good point! I've seen others add in a notes file in the distribution folder. Maybe I'll try something similar. Thanks for giving it a go!

WOW

The sounds and effects from this game at the endings are well done! I even felt shivers after reaching the same ending twice (took me multiple tries to get the other ending). The game was able to create a heavy atmosphere and express the dread and desperation of the character. Thank you for making this game!

Thanks so much for playing!! Watching your video is so helpful and encouraging haha. It’s really cool getting to see how people work their way through the game. Thanks also for linking it to me ❤️

Ok I'm glad I found some time to check it out.

Man. What a game. It's hard for me to find the right words to describe it. I think that you managed to create an incredible game that fills the player with dread, even if the experience itself isn't long.

The thing that got to me the most was the sound design. I mean. Wow. You did something truly amazing. Especially in the later part (I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about) - those sounds made me shiver a bit!
I also love the simplicity of your art style - in my opinion it adds a lot to the game's atmosphere.

I encountered a small bug where when I played the game for the second time I interacted with a random tree and touched it to see a different result, after I went through it the screen never faded in again. But after reloading it worked perfectly well, so possibly it was just a one time code error.
I'm grateful you included warnings on the games page, since the topic is quite heavy and some effects might be too much for some people.  If I had to point something out, I think the only thing you could add would be to implement those warnings at the beginning of the game, since the browser version appears above the game's description. But it's not a big thing - like I said, the game's really good so it's the only thing I could nitpick, haha!

So, to sum it all up: You created an incredible game and I hope to see more from you in the future. I think you have a lot to say and you have a great sense of how to create dread and tension. It was truly an honour to take part in the same game jam as you!

Thank you for giving it a go!! I really wanted to lean into the horror this go around and may have overcorrected a big from my last game, haha. It was hard to work on, if I'm honest. It is really dark. But it's the story I wanted to tell and I hope I did it some justice. This was my first time using images/pictures in an rpg maker game and I'm sure I will get better as I keep going, especially for opening credits/content warnings and all. I like the look of my opening page but I agree it could be more explicit in its warning. Thank you SO much for your words and feedback, this whole game jam experience is a huge learning curve and I hope to see more from you as well in upcoming jams!

This fills me with... a lot of psychological lash in my memory.

You'd think I may have been a parent but no, I experience something more. It's so dark it gave me mild depression and that's what horror feels dreading down my spine.

The text above terrifies me to just dread me a guide that something is already off from a start though I think some cutscenes like the newspaper and letters bothered me because it means I have to press a key for this. RPG Maker's flaw so I'll ignore it for now.

[stuff beyond stuff]

The things a mother can do for their child because of how their mental state goes so low is a concept I quite like. I have read a manga similar to this trope enough that she kills out of revenge. For this mother, there is a tread of hope she could have actually stopped herself to do something that she shouldn't go through and can't be possible. She wasn't close to the deep end.

But what can she do? She seemed desperate enough that she end up following through and received what she did for the cause. I enjoyed so much this is such a dreadful yet wonderful game. You deserve so much applaud for the story to manipulate this simple story into something people should've expected yet, let them immerse themselves as the mother on what she has been through.

Well besides the event rpg maker flaws, this is something I genuinely think would last longer in memory.

i know we chatted in Discord as well but just wanted to say again thanks for playing and thank you for this lovely comment. I really tried to swing for “dark” in this game and im grateful people are willing to dive in.

uhhh... shit.

wow, that was really friggin heavy (in a good way!). the art style, atmosphere, music and writing all come together to make a game that just... *feels* wrong (in a good way!), and like every decision and step you're making is a mistake you can't come back from. that, mixed with such a dark and depressing story, made me really feel the despair the protagonist is in (in a good way!) and made me question if i should be doing any of the things i was doing. but, like her, i kept pushing forward, determined to reach the end goal, without knowing that that goal wouldn't be what i wished for in the slightest... (in a good way! is it clear yet it's hard to praise such an intentionally disturbing game without it sounding bad-).

honestly? my biggest problem with the game is that i wanted more. having taken certain choices on my first playthrough, i hoped things would change drastically with different decisions, leading up to a bunch of different endings. but then i reminded myself that this was for a game jam with a little over a month to make the games, so that probably would've been impossible lol. still, i'd honestly be interested in checking out a game you made that had a lot of different choices and endings, if that sounds fun to make (or if you've already made one like that).

in conclusion, BroodyGaming is an extremely fitting name for this game! :D

Thank you so much for playing! It's wild, so much of what you said is almost verbatim what I would tell people I was "going for" while I worked on it. So hearing that kind of feedback, that you achieved on any level what you were aiming for is such a huge compliment for any creative work. I personally LOVE choice based video games. You're correct in that making a lot of very different endings in a game jam is a time logistic nightmare, but the more of these I do the faster I'm getting. Definitely stay tuned, I'll be implementing choice based gameplay in most of my projects!

not surprising to hear that's the tone you were going for lol, and yeah you definitely pulled it off!

and oh cool! i'll be interested in seeing what you can make with more experience and time management skills on your hands :>
