To me, the gameplay during first locations (while hunting hands) feels quite long and unclear. I think, more instractions on how to make progress throughout this part might have kept me playing longer :)
Still, sound and choice of colours create soft, comfortable atmosphere. I guess, looping music during tutorial would be a good idea as well
thanks for giving it a go! I’ve had a few people wonder if the screen flipping is a bug / not getting the first level. Trying to brain storm a way to make it more clear. You just have to keep touching the hands until it progresses, simple as that and I guess I thought the constantly flipping screen kept it engaging enough haha. But best part of doing game jams is trying new stuff and seeing the response! So thanks for the feedback.
Appreciate your detailed answer! Indeed, there's no better place to give new ideas a shot (even the craziest ones). So, great job! Sure you'll find a way to make your game even better, good luck with that!
Saying that the art direction was good would be just reductive after what I experienced.
The abstract nature of the world around the protagonist was very well made, and there were points where I stared at the screen speechless at how gorgeous the visuals were.
Each area had its own charm, and out of the details that characterized those, my favorite was the eye of the sea creature underneath the protagonist.
The one in the area with the crabs.
At first, I didn't even notice it was an eye until I saw it getting closed in real time.
I liked how that area was so full of life and full of stuff like that.
That said, I was really confused for most of my experience while trying to understand the story.
The metaphorical narrative of the game definitely fit well with its abstract visuals, but I was like "What is this supposed to mean?" constantly.
My instinct tells me that all of this was related to a past trauma of the protagonist, but I don't think that I could be more specific than that if I had to explain what I understood about it.
PS. I noticed two oddities while playing. First, the description of the Blue Shade is wrong. It says that the Blue Jellyfishes are near the Blue Crab, but they're actually near the green one.
Second, the LEFT and RIGHT controls were inverted during the first area of the game.
This happened anytime the screen would fade to black, and when the screen faded to black, the controls would return to normal.
This happened several times until I ended up in the next area.
ahh thank you BlueRose!! I had a lot of fun drawing for this one. Went a little crazy with the layers haha 😂
good catch on the crab mixup!!! I’ll have to update that. A classic example of me being legitimately dyslexic and I just got it flipped. Super important that that’s correct tho so I’ll fix thatttt. And the screen flipping is 100% intentional! I figured out a way to flip the X axis of the screen and worked it into the puzzle. Ur not the first person to wonder if it’s a bug though! So idk how to make it more clear it’s intentionally part of the level. HMMMM.
But stoked to be done for now and looking forward to OUR super cool collab! You rock 🥳🥳
What a creepy vibe. Keep up the good work! ♥
Ahh! Thanks for giving it a go 🫶
